ROSpider

A ROS 2 hexapod with a 6DOF arm, lidar and AI vision, on NVIDIA Jetson or Raspberry Pi 5.

  • Raspberry Pi
  • NVIDIA Jetson
  • Suggested for university

ROSpider is an all-terrain ROS hexapod from Hiwonder with a 6DOF robot arm on its back. Eighteen 35kg high-voltage bus servos and an inverse kinematics gait let it change gait and posture to cross rubble, bridges and narrow passages. A Jetson or Raspberry Pi 5 controller works with an STM32 sub-controller, and a lidar handles SLAM mapping, navigation and obstacle avoidance. The Starter Kit has a monocular camera; the Standard, Advanced and Ultimate kits carry a 3D depth camera for 3D grasping and sorting. The Advanced Kit adds the WonderEcho Pro AI voice box and the Ultimate Kit a 6-microphone array, for voice control and large AI model applications.

What it does

Built for.

  • Inverse kinematics gait

ROSpider switches between tripod and wave gaits, adjusts its attitude and balances itself, so it can cross narrow passages, bridges and collapsed ground.

  • Lidar SLAM

The TOF lidar maps a space for centimetre-level navigation and path planning, detects moving obstacles in real time and can follow a target.

  • 3D vision and a 6DOF arm

In the Standard, Advanced and Ultimate kits, the depth camera fuses colour and depth data, and inverse kinematics lets the arm track, grasp, sort and carry objects.

  • Voice and large AI models

With the Advanced Kit's WonderEcho Pro or the Ultimate Kit's microphone array, language, speech and vision models let ROSpider take spoken commands, describe a scene, track a named object, and navigate somewhere to pick something up and bring it back.

  • Vision and deep learning

YOLO26 object detection and KCF object tracking run on the camera, alongside slam_toolbox lidar mapping and TEB path planning.

  • Control

Drive it from the iOS and Android app, the wireless controller or the Windows PC software's graphical action editor.

Where it is used

Applications.

  • University ROS 2 courses on legged mobile manipulation
  • SLAM mapping and navigation over uneven terrain
  • 3D grasping and sorting with a depth camera (Standard Kit and up)
